Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara

Sikhs began settling in Leicester in significant numbers after the Second World War, contributing to the city’s cultural diversity and economic development. The establishment of the city’s first Sikh Gurdwaras in the 1960s marked a pivotal moment in the growth and organization of Leicester’s Sikh community. By 2021, the Sikh population in Leicester had risen to over 15,000, representing approximately 5% of the city’s residents, compared to a national average of 0.9%.

The Sikh community’s contributions are particularly evident during annual Nagar Kirtans (processions). The Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan, held in April, attracts thousands of people from Leicester and the Midlands, with a vibrant procession through the city centre. Another significant event is the Nagar Kirtan in November, celebrating Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Parkash Purab (birth anniversary), which unites the community in faith and joy.

A powerful and well-attended Kakkar Protection Panthic Meeting was held at Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara Sahib, Leicester, bringing together members of the Sikh community and supporters from across the region.

The meeting focused on raising awareness about the importance of protecting Sikh articles of faith and promoting understanding through respectful and constructive dialogue. A large turnout of Sangat reflected the community's unity and commitment to safeguarding Sikh identity and religious freedoms.

We were honoured to hear from speakers representing different communities, alongside distinguished guests including MP Shockat Adam and other respected dignitaries, who shared messages of support, understanding, and community cohesion.

The event was filmed by Channel Punjab, helping to share these important discussions with a wider audience.

The key message from the evening was clear: let us spread love, not hate. Through education, respect, and peaceful engagement, we can build stronger communities and foster greater understanding for future generations.

Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed, and supported this important event.
